Hurricane Larry Updates

Sep 9, 2021

[10:00am – 09/10/2021 – Update]

As of 10:00am this morning, we are happy to report that we only suffered one storm-related outage due to tree overgrowth throughout Hurricane Larry.

We want to thank our teams for their swift preparations and careful attention to detail. It is this dedication that ensures the safety of our team and the public.

We also want to thank you for staying with us through the storm; for taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of yourselves and your loved ones; and for ensuring your property landscaping is maintained, which limits disruptions to the distribution system. Your assistance is appreciated!

Storm Safety Tip #6:
You can decrease the chance of outages in your neighborhood by cutting your trees back a minimum of 10 feet from overhead power lines and poles.

If your tree limbs are dangerously close to power lines, call BELCO on 296-3408 and we will turn the power off so that you or your landscaper can safely trim back trees. Be sure to call BELCO at least 3 weeks in advance, so an appointment can be confirmed.

Don’t wait until a storm is approaching. Trim your trees now!

[6:00pm Update]

We are pleased to report that, as of 6:00pm today, we still have not experienced any storm-related outages. As long as conditions remain the same or continue to improve, we won’t issue any further outage-related updates until approximately 9:00am tomorrow morning (September 10). We will only issue further outage-related updates should conditions worsen.

We still encourage you to drive cautiously if you have to be on the roads this evening!

Storm Safety Tip #5:
After a storm has passed and your power has been restored, assess the lights on your property. If a light bulb is extremely bright or dim, turn off your power at the meter and contact BELCO. This may indicate a voltage problem.

[4:00pm Update]

We are pleased to report that as of 4:00pm today, we still have not experienced any storm-related outages.

As a gentle reminder, please continue to exercise caution while driving today. Your safety is of the utmost importance.

Storm Safety Tip #4:
After a storm has passed and it is safe to assess your property, carefully check for electrical damage, such as frayed wires, downed power lines, sparks or the smell of hot or burned insulation. Be sure to steer clear of piles of debris or downed foliage that may conceal live power lines. We encourage you to call 955 at the time of discovery to report any such issues as all emergency or life-threatening situations will be handled immediately. In the case of downed wires, we can switch off power on that line from our central control room.

[10:00am Update]

As we prepare for potential impact from Hurricane Larry, we will post updates on storm-related outages, restoration efforts and at-home storm safety tips on our website (BELCO Blog), on our Facebook (@BELCOBermuda) and on our Twitter (@BELCOBermuda).

As this storm is not a direct hit, we understand that you may be moving about the island as normal. Please exercise extreme caution when driving through severe weather. Please be observant of your surroundings and drive slowly. Your safety is of the utmost importance.

Storm Safety Tip #1:
A downed power line can energise structures it comes into contact with, such as a fence, railing, or even a car. Should this occur, please remember the following: (1) stay at least 35ft or more away from downed powerlines; (2) always assume downed powerlines are energised and dangerous; and (3) stay clear of piles of debris or downed foliage that may conceal live power lines.
