Don’t try to rescue anyone who has touched a downed power line because electrical current can travel through them to you and you risk becoming a victim yourself.

Storm Safety Tip #9:
Don’t run from a fallen line. Running from a fallen line may cause your legs to bridge current from higher to lower voltage and you may receive a shock. Instead, keep your legs together and shuffle away with both feet on the ground. Shuffle a safe distance (35 feet or more) away from other utility poles.

Storm Safety Tip #6:
Trees and foliage hitting power lines are the number one reason for power outages, especially during hurricanes. And these outages are entirely preventable. Now is the time for property owners to trim their trees at a minimum of ten feet away from power lines to prevent an outage before the next storm. 

It is important to be safe while trimming your trees. Please call BELCO at 299-2800 or email  to schedule a power shutdown for your tree trimming. We ask that you arrange this three week in advance so that we have enough time to schedule your power shutdown.

As we prepare for potential impact from Tropical Storm Alex, we will post updates on storm-related outages, restoration efforts and at-home storm safety tips on our website (BELCO Blog), on our Facebook (@BELCOBermuda) and on our Twitter (@BELCOBermuda).

BELCO’s Crisis Management Team have met to discuss and plan for the likely impacts of Tropical Storm Alex as the Bermuda Weather Service has forecast wet weather and periods of tropical storm force winds beginning late Sunday and lasting through Monday.

BELCO’s worksites where trenching is taking place are being prepared for the potential impacts of heavy rain and tropical storm force winds and motorists are advised to use caution when in the vicinity of the open trenches.

As this storm is not a direct hit, we understand that you may be moving about the island as normal. Please exercise extreme caution when driving through severe weather. Please be observant of your surroundings and drive slowly. Your safety is of the utmost importance.

Unplug all appliances, and electronics, which are not protected by surge protection equipment. It is also wise to unhook the cable box from your television.
