Safety Moment

Flipping a light switch. Plugging in a coffeemaker. Charging a laptop computer. These are second nature for most of us. Electricity makes our lives easier. However, we need to be cautious and keep safety in mind.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends unplugging electrical devices when not in use as something unplugged can’t start fires or shock someone.

However, it may not be practical to unplug everything, every day, especially if the item has a clock on it that the household relies on. For low-load devices that you may not wish to unplug daily, a power strip with an off switch is a simple alternative; however, a power strip and/or extension cord for high-load appliances, including toasters, should never be used. Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, microwave ovens, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet.

Living Sustainably
The first day of Spring and the annual spring cleaning cleanse is just around the corner! This spring consider the affects your cleaning products and practices have on the environment.

Here are 5 easy ways to kick-start your spring cleaning more sustainably:

  1. Reach for the baking soda
Baking soda is renowned for its ability to eliminate odours. Just sprinkle a generous amount onto carpets, let it sit and vacuum it up for near-instant freshness. This kitchen staple can also be paired with white vinegar to unclog drains, and clean toilets, or mixed with water to create a de-greasing paste for stubborn mess!
  2. Lean into lemons
Not only do lemons smell lovely, but they also come packed with antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Use this stalwart citrus on its own to wipe down contaminated surfaces, or combine it with white vinegar for a versatile, all-in-one cleaning solution.
  3. Speaking about White Vinegar
This all natural cleaner contains the antibacterial properties you need to scour your house from top to bottom. Dilute your vinegar to make a powerful stain remover, or create a 50/50 mix with water to kick traditional glass cleaners to the curb.
  4. Take home a houseplant
Certain types of houseplants can actually improve air quality by taking in toxins and releasing clean, fresh oxygen for you to enjoy. Not to mention, some studies show that certain plants can be mood-boosting.
  5. Fall in love with microfibre
Microfibre towels are a great alternative to paper towels for a few different reasons: (1) you can wash and reuse them over and over again; (2) since they last so long, you’ll save money on the paper products you no longer need; (3) they can be used dry, wet, or with a cleaning agent; and (4) they dry quickly, so bacteria are less likely to grow on them.

Adopting some green habits this year can help you make your spring cleaning more environmentally friendly while saving you money in the process. With these green cleaning tips and a little bit of elbow grease, you’re well on your way to a fresh and happy home.
