Our Restoration Process
Once the storm has passed and it is safe to do so, BELCO restoration crews are mobilised with personnel designated to strategic locations throughout the island in order to begin the restoration efforts as quickly as possible.
The order of restoration is as follows: main circuits, branch lines and individual customers. BELCO restores main line circuits first, focusing initially on those that supply the Island’s essential services and critical infrastructure. Repairs must be completed in the order above because main lines feed all other lines.
Our crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Please exercise caution when driving near our working team members as safety is of the utmost importance.

Safety Tip
Wiring that has become wet or damaged during a major storm cannot be safely reused, even it appears to have completely dried. It must be replaced. Identify any wiring that was under water or dampened. If the water did not reach all levels of a building, wiring that was not wet may still be safely used. Have a qualified electrician inspect any suspect electrical appliances or wiring.

Our crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. We ask that you please be cautious of them when driving by if you must be out on the roads. If not we encourage you to stay off the roads as long as possible.
REMINDER
Do NOT call to report power outages at this time. Customers with AMI meters don’t have to call as outages are reported directly to BELCO.
Please keep out of the way of BELCO crews as they work.

Safety Tip
Hooking up your generator directly into your home power supply could energise the outside power lines and electrocute a utility worker. If you must connect the generator through the house wiring to power appliances, use a qualified and licensed electrician to install an appropriate power transfer switch.

Safety Tip
Downed power lines pose an extreme danger. Stay away from downed power lines – at least 33 feet or more (that’s approximately three car lengths).

[ September 23, 2022  |  7:00am Update ]

Even though Hurricane Fiona has passed its closest point of approach, the Bermuda Weather Service has issued a reminder that we are still under a Hurricane Warning and we should expect a prolonged period of strong tropical storm force winds for most areas of the island to linger through the morning.

As of 7:00am today, we have the following storm-related outages to report:

St. Georges 2,380
Pembroke 3,694
Devonshire 2,876
Sandys 1,934
Smith’s 2,155
Warwick 3,953
Paget 2,555
Southampton 2,843
Hamilton 1,776

REMINDERS
DO NOT call to report power outages in the immediate aftermath of a major storm so that telephone lines can be available for emergency calls. Customers who have had advanced meters installed no longer need to report power outages as a signal will be received by BELCO automatically when any abnormality, such as a power outage, occurs.

BELCO cannot restore power until daylight and safe weather conditions as the entire grid needs to be inspected first.
Once it is safe to begin restoration efforts, the order of restoration is as follows: main circuits, branch lines and individual customers. BELCO restores main line circuits first, focusing initially on those that supply the Island’s essential services and critical infrastructure. Repairs must be completed in the order above because main lines feed all other lines.

Safety Tip
Stay clear of piles of debris or downed foliage that may conceal live power lines.

[ September 22, 2022  |  11:30pm Update ]

The number one priority for BELCO before, during and after a hurricane is always the safety of the Company staff and our customers.

The second priority is to protect the power generation plant and distribution grid from damage.

During a storm, our team members are at our Operations Centre monitoring and managing the plant and the grid, recording outages and responding to any emergencies that may occur as it is safe to do so.

REMEMBER
BELCO restoration crews cannot safely begin to restore power until hurricane-force winds or storm conditions subside.

It is important to remember NOT to call BELCO during a storm to report a power outage. However, during a storm, we DO encourage you to call BELCO in the event of an emergency or life-threatening situation, such as downed power lines or pole fires.

Safety Tip
NEVER touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. If it is safe to do so, turn off electricity at the main breaker or fuse box to prevent electric shock.

We will provide an update in the morning.
Stay Safe Bermuda!

[ September 22, 2022  |  6:00pm Update ]

The Bermuda Weather Service has shared that Hurricane Fiona is set to pass the island as a Cat 3 at approximately 101nm to the WNW of Bermuda at 5:00am on Friday, September 23, 2022.

At BELCO, our teams are still working on preparations for the storm’s passing. Not only do we strategically place materials throughout the island in advance, but with a team of 237 members, we must ensure the planning and logistics measures are communicated to all team members effectively.

Safety Tip
We ask customers NOT to call to report power outages during or immediately following the storm. BELCO has a limited number of telephone lines, which MUST be kept open for emergency calls, such as pole fires, down power lines, and other critical emergencies.

Customers with AMI meters that have lost power will already be logged as having an outage.

We encourage everyone to make their final preparations.
Stay Safe Bermuda!

[ September 22, 2022  |  3:30pm Update ]

Due to the passing of Hurricane Fiona, our Customer Experience Centre will be closed to walk-in customers tomorrow, Friday, September 23, 2022.

[ September 22, 2022  |  3:00pm Update ]

We have been busy preparing our campus, work sites, equipment and crews. Check out a little bit about how we prepare here: Hurricane Fiona: Belco crews ‘in full preparation mode’ – The Royal Gazette | Bermuda News, Business, Sports, Events, & Community |

How have you been preparing for the passing of Hurricane Fiona?

Did You Know?
BELCO restoration crews cannot safely begin to restore power until hurricane-force winds or storm conditions subside; however, before the storm started, BELCO crews and equipment were strategically placed throughout the island in order to be ready directly following its conclusion.

Safety Tip
Unplug any appliances, electronics, or other sensitive equipment before the onset of high winds. While plug-in surge protectors protect against common, small surges, unplugging is the safest bet for lightning surges that may occur during a storm.

[ September 22, 2022  |  1:45pm Update ]

As Hurricane Fiona approaches, our Managing Director, Shelly Leman, spoke with AccuWeather about our preparations. Check out the report here: Trending Now Weather Videos | AccuWeather

Did You Know?
Before the onset of a storm, BELCO positions restoration equipment in strategic locations across the island.

Safety Tip
Some storms, contain very little rain, which can cause the air to become laden with salt that sticks to transformers. When the transformer heats up the salt becomes liquified which causes short circuits and sometimes fire. If you see a pole fire stay well clear and call 955.

[ September 22, 2022  |  1:00pm Update ]

The Bermuda Weather Service has placed the island under a Hurricane Warning, forecasting Hurricane Fiona is set to pass the island as a Cat 3 at approximately 97nm to the NW of Bermuda at 5:00am on Friday, September 23, 2022.

At BELCO, we are tracking Hurricane Fiona. We are preparing our campus, substations and crews, which allows us to deplo assets and crews quickly to needed locations and not be impeded by any obstacles on the island’s roads.

Safety Tip
NEVER overload your electrical outlets. Overloaded outlets are one of the main causes of electrical fires, especially during and after a major storm when systems are more fragile.

[ September 20, 2022  |  10:00am Update ]

As of this morning, the Bermuda Weather Service has shared that Hurricane Fiona is a threat to Bermuda, forecasting the hurricane to pass the island as a Cat 4 at approximately 97nm to the WNW of Bermuda at 4:00am on Friday, September 23, 2022.

At BELCO, we are tracking Hurricane Fiona. Our Crisis Management team has been activated and our storm preparations are well underway.

Once impact by a hurricane is confirmed, assets, which include new poles, transformers and other critical supplies are placed in strategic locations ahead of the storm so they can be deployed quickly to needed locations and not be impeded by any obstacles on the island’s roads.
Safety Tip
Be prepared! Storm preparation is key. A big part of remaining safe is preparing as much as possible in advance.
