Fuel Adjustment Rates

Fuel Adjustment Rate, Year-on-Year Comparison
(cents per kilowatt hour sold)

The Fuel Adjustment Rate (FAR) contains two components: the Fuel Adjustment and Government Taxes. Your cost is calculated by multiplying the FAR with your total kWh usage, which is the amount of electricity you consume.

The fuel adjustment is based on the cost of purchasing fuel and transporting it to BELCO.

Government tax is the duty put on imported fuel, at a cost of $31.79 per barrel, plus St. George’s UNESCO world heritage Tax at $0.40 per barrel.

It is important to note that the prices at which BELCO can procure fuel are greatly influenced by global oil prices and all cost increases as well as any savings due to a reduction in fuel costs are passed on to customers.
