BELCO Scholarship Recipients 2022

We are proud to announce the recipients of our annual scholarship awards for 2022 with a total of $140,000 awarded to 13 young Bermudians. The scholarship recipients are as follows:   

Di’Neasha DeSilva is the recipient of the A.T. Oughton Post Graduate Business and Finance Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $25,000.00 for one year and was granted to Di’Neasha who will study at Barry University for a Master’s in Business Administration.

This Scholarship was established in 2010 and named the A.T. Oughton Post Graduate Scholarship for Business and Social Science Studies to commemorate Mr. Oughton’s tenure at BELCO and his contribution to BELCO’s legacy of excellence. Mr. Oughton began his BELCO career in 1956 as Purchasing Manager and became General Manager in 1982. Mr. Oughton served as President and Chief Executive Officer from August 1992 until his retirement in December 1993.  As of February 28, 2021, the scholarship name changed to A. T. Oughton Post Graduate Business and Finance Scholarship.

Damon Armstrong is the recipient of the D. Pimentel Internal Scholarship. Damon will attend the University of West England, Bristol to study for a Bachelor’s in Business Management and Economics (with a Foundation Year).

BELCO’s internal scholarship is named after Mr. Dennis Pimentel who started with the company as an Apprentice, worked with BELCO for over 30 years and through hard work and dedication was elevated to the post of company President. The D. Pimentel internal scholarship is for professional career development and full-time study in an accredited degree programme, in a field deemed important for our future business requirements, for a maximum value of $20,000 per annum for a maximum of four years

The BELCO Education Awards were established in the early 1980s for academic studies leading to the award of an undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”).  The purpose of these awards is to recognise the scholar’s desire to further their knowledge in the STEM fields and to provide an opportunity for their insight, knowledge, and experience to be shared within the Company and in the wider community. The awards range in value between $2,500 and $20,000 for a first degree to an accredited educational institution. The recipients of the 2022 Educational Awards are as follows:

BELCO STEM EDUCATION AWARDS – $5,000.00  

  • Cormac Sagurs: University of Southampton, Master of Engineering in Aeronautics and Astronautics / Spacecraft Engineering 
  • William Welch: University of Waterloo, Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering 
  • Ari Harrison: University of Manchester, Bachelor of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering
  • Giovanni Hollis: Northeastern University, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering
  • Christopher Skinner: Queen’s University, Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering

BELCO STEM Education Awards – $10,000.00

  • Kiara Burcher: Western University, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics  
  • Ayana Bean: Cambrian College, Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Power Engineering Technology
  • Imogen Peckett: Cardiff University, Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography
  • Liam Walker: McMaster University, Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics

BELCO STEM Education Awards – $15,000.00  

  • An Mei Daniels: University of Exeter, Master of Science in Natural Sciences
    (Grandfather, Gilbert Daniels, accepted the award on her behalf)
  • Seth Hardtman: Morgan State University, Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering

BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “As BELCO moves Bermuda to a sustainable energy future, the Company understands that tertiary education and the skill sets we will need for prospective employees of our Company is more important than ever. This year we received many outstanding applications, and we are thrilled to empower 13 young Bermudians with a combined $140,000 as they continue their education. I wish all recipients of the 2022 BELCO scholarships every success in their studies and look forward to them returning to Bermuda to help build a sustainable future.”
